Tips for Potty Training Puppies

Tips for Potty Training Puppies

I know, your so excited to have a puppy in your house. No doubt that little bundle of joy will light up a room. However you still have to worry about potty training your puppy. Now this is a big deal to some and pretty easy for others. Well in case you are like me then I put these quick tips together to help you. These are important points everyone should keep in mind when potty training puppies.

The Do’s

  1. Remember that a puppy is no different than a human baby, they have small bladders and have to go often. Oblige them.
  2. Take the puppy to the same place every time you want it to go to the bathroom. This way it will start to associate that spot with going to the bathroom.
  3. If You catch the puppy inside make a loud noise and clap and that will usually startle him and make him stop mid stream. Pick him up and take him out to his designated place and let him finish.
  4. Be patient and consistent with him. When the puppy goes where he is supposed to praise him and make him feel like he is the best puppy in the world.

The Don’ts

  1. Don’t punish your puppy if it has an accident. They cant understand that they are in trouble for not going outside
  2. Don’t expect to much from your puppy. It cant hold it in until it gets older. It will need to go about every 2 hours.
  3. Don’t overdo the treats. They can be a very effective method for training when you only use them for positive reinforcement. But if you give them treats all the time then they can’t make the association between the treats and doing what you want. Namely going potty outside.

Keep these little tips in mind when you start potty training puppies and you will see a big difference in how fast they learn. They will also be more friendly and responsive if you don’t punish them all the time. This is one of the biggest things I see people do that is simply counterproductive. good luck in your future potty training endeavors!
